Our Hookstory #1 (NSC Edition)

Night Music

I grew up in a half-built home with a banana tree in the backyard. At night, bullets would pepper the air like notes blasting from big brass bells–my very own night music. Now, I can harmonize with just about anything.

-Brianna Mattis, Biology

Explosion

Energy is neither created or destroyed. A little piece of the universe, of the Heavens, exists in us. And sometimes, when I feel so angry that I could just explode, my stardust is reminded of when it did too.

-Taylor Shea Carroll, Biochemistry

Significance

A love letter to the Nier series... You didn't teach me what it means to be human but thank you for reminding me of who I am at the lowest points of my journey.

-Esther Ko, Biology

New Family

I lived far from people that were part of me. The culture, last name, and faces, I always thought detracted from me. But in science, I find a new family, one that loves something so passionately they devote their lives.

-Misery Yells*, Public Health

Do you wanna defeat big pharma and capitalism? Grab a FREE condom from us as we take on corporations one package of love at a time! Wrap before you tap. Free condoms at SSB or on Speedway on Wednesdays and Fridays.

-Hanming Li, Biochemistry

Answers

I prayed for an albino squirrel, once, before a physics exam. It was nonsensical - if prayers are answered, one needs no white squirrel. But she was waiting, after: mocking, pert, upside-down and knowledgeable. She said, “No luck. But congratulations.”

-Sierra Chadwick, Biology and Environmental Science

Spaces

Our spaces hold pieces of us. I scatter my memories through this campus– strewing them about the tower, sowing them in the grassy lawns, splashing them into the fountain, slipping them into cracks between the bricks in my yellow road.

-Poojitha Diggikar, Neuroscience

The Raccoon Story

There’s a cool breeze over this staircase. I’m swallowed by stars and planes and flitting lights of finding family. The sky isn’t touching the ground.

Look down. There. Glowing orbs growing closer. “The Raccoon Story” becomes our party trick.

Run.

-Aira Balasubramanian, Biochemistry
