To Women In Science

Written by Taylor Shea carroll

To Maria Salomea Skłodowska–Curie

Who wasn’t just the first woman to win a Nobel,

but the first person to win two,

In two subjects.

To Rosalind E. Franklin

Who received thanks,

In a footnote,

Instead of her name in the header.

To Henrietta Lacks,

Whose cells were taken,

Without her permission,

To preserve lives that weren’t her own.

To Ada Lovelace,

Who invented computer algorithms,

More than a century,

Before the computer was born.

To Rachel Carson,

Who fought for our world,

Amidst an overwhelming,

Silence.

To Jane Goodall,

Who showed that compassion,

Has a place in science,

And everywhere.

To Christa Mcauliffe,

And Sally Ride,

And Mae Jemison,

For flying high.

To Mary Jackson,

Katherine Johnson,

and Dorothy Vaughan,

For getting them there.

To my mother,

Jeanine Carroll,

For teaching mathematics,

With a baby on her hip.

And to women in science,

To women everywhere,

Happy women’s history month,

And thank you.
