Mathematics is often described as a foundational pillar of education and is useful in many contexts, both inside and outside of STEM-centered fields. In order to better serve students interested in mathematics and its uses, the UT Mathematics Department is advocating for the creation of two new mathematics certificates.

How do the proposed certificates differ from other math-related certificates?

Current certificates with coursework in mathematics are highly specialized and focus on concepts outside of the direct scope of the mathematics department. These certificates require a strong interest in statistical modeling, quantum information science, or other fields that may be alienating for students with a comparatively broader interest in mathematics. The proposed certificates have a more diverse focus.

How do the proposed certificates differ from each other?

The Mathematics Department hopes to offer two separate tracks for non-Mathematics majors interested in the discipline. Students pursuing degrees with a connection to mathematics, such as students in CNS, Cockrell, or other STEM-related majors, are encouraged to explore mathematical concepts at a more advanced level through the first proposed certificate.

Those who are pursuing coursework that has little overlap with mathematics are encouraged to pursue the second proposed certificate, which focuses more on reintroducing students to the innate creativity of mathematics, as well as applications of mathematics in social justice, history, and other often unconnected fields. Students pursuing the second certificate may not have strong mathematics backgrounds, but an interest in using mathematics or mathematical tools in interdisciplinary settings.

Next steps

Student support and interest (as expressed through surveys) is necessary to support the Math Department's specific application for the proposed certificates. Student feedback will dictate the final form of the proposed plans.
