Concord
CREATED by Mehak Arora
Mehak Arora is a freshman biochemistry major who loves to work at the intersections—she has her foot in every door. This same philosophy inspired the charcoal piece entitled Concord.
“Energy cannot be created or destroyed as everything in its natural manner maintains a state of equity. Black becomes white, rigid becomes soft, and ideas collide to transform while maintaining order. This is what Concord is a depiction of- the stark contrasts of rigid, dark lines at the intersection together with a lighter, fluid abstract. The piece takes inspiration from the famous Chinese philosophy of Yin and Yang. Both the first law of thermo and this philosophy depict the interconnectedness and dependency of harmony in a system. Yin can become Yang but cannot be without it, just as one form of energy can become another, but it cannot be destroyed. The complementary forces seen in both the art and the ancient theory lead to antagonist, yet balanced art.“
