Why Golf is the Best Sport

Why Golf is the Best Sport

SEAN DALY

Many passionately argue that golf is not a sport, however I would like  to make the case that golf is not only a sport, but the best sport ever created. Firstly, to dispute those who believe that golf is not a sport,  dictionary.com indeed mentions golf as an example of a sport. Golf, especially when walking, burns several thousand calories per round, and a single round of golf can last anywhere from 3-5 hours.

Now that we have established that golf is in fact a sport,we should discuss why golf is the best sport. Golf is one of the oldest sports, originating in the Netherlands where players hit a ball with a stick to a relatively distant target in the fewest strokes possible.  The modern form of golf, however, is believed to have developed in Scotland around the 15th century. There is a reason that it is still played to this day, because it is a sport that anyone can play, at any age or skill level, and still enjoy . Golf is also a year-round sport, allowing people to play across all seasons, hot or cold. In addition, golf  teaches players many valuable lessons.

The best lesson that golf teaches is sheer patience, as a single round normally takes 4 hours. One must constantly wait between shots, which can often be difficult to the beginner. It is extremely important to be patient when playing golf, because there is much more thinking and calculating involved  than it may seem. It is very easy to get down on yourself when you are not playing well, so it is important to stay patient and positive, because there is often a good shot to come! Golf also teaches you the virtue of sportsmanship, as even though it is an individual sport, you will often play as part of a team or with other players.  In golf, you must be respectful of other players by following all rules and being quiet while others are playing. Golf is a game of honesty, where one can self-report their scores, and can easily lie by simply writing down one score instead of another. It is important to be honest to yourself and others when playing golf, as lying about scores will give you no benefits in the long run.  No other sport gives you all of these lessons all in 4 hours. Golf is a game that teaches one to grow in athletic ability as well as in positive personal traits. In conclusion, golf is in fact a sport, and it is the best sport because it is fun to play and it teaches you valuable life lessons that no other sport does.
