Medicine for the Soul: When Was the Last Time You Danced?

EUFROSINO VELOSO Back in ancient times, if a person were to consult a shaman due to feeling depressed or disheartened, the shaman would respond: When was the last time you danced?

When our minds are absorbed with thoughts and concerns, the sound of music can put us to ease. Whether it be a tune playing from a car radio or a song playing in a restaurant, music floods into our cells and vibrates our inner soul. We may find ourselves following the rhythm, secretly wishing our whole body would surrender to the moment and groove. As college students taking challenging courses, the freedom of dancing may be just what we need.

Luckily, there are a plethora of dance organizations here at our university. Here are some of the ones you can choose from:

The Texas Roustabouts:

If you like dancing to hip-hop, contemporary, and/or jazz, the Texas Roundabouts Dance Crew may be for you.

The Korean Undergraduates Students Association Dance Crew:

Although they dance many styles, look no further than KUSA Dance Crew if you want to dance like a K-Pop star.

The Filipino Students Association Modern Team:

No worries, you don’t have to be Filipino in order to participate. As long as you enjoy doing body rolls to R&B and hip-hop, the FSA Modern Team may be right up your alley.

Redefined Dance Company:

If you have interest in being a choreographer, Redefined Dance Company is the perfect outlet. RDC performs with hip-hop, R&B, pop, EDM, contemporary, and more, while spreading their love for dance through free workshops for the public.

Of course, you don’t have to be in a dance organization to enjoy dancing. Dancing is all about expressing oneself in ways words cannot, whether it be on a stage, club dance floor, or bedroom. The next time you are bogged with stress and worries, do your soul a favor and surrender to the music!
